How does one measure happiness? The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network seems to have found the answer. Since 2012, the organisation has asked people all over the world to rate how happy they are where they live, based on factors such as life expectancy, community, government and politics, law and order, among others. From those answers, 156 countries are ranked in the World Happiness Report.

Fiona Lally works as a press officer at the European Council for Young Farmers. Last August, she visited Finland as a guest of the Finnish Rural Network for the Rent a (Rural) Finn project. We recently spoke with Fiona to find out what she thought about her visit to the happiest country in the world and if she has managed to hang on to the Finnish secret to happiness.

Five tips on how to be happy like a Finn

Timo Kukko was one of eight happiness guides chosen by Visit Finland. His task was to show tourists from all over the world what makes Finns the happiest people in the world. He was also Fiona Lally’s personal happiness guide for the Rent a (Rural) Finn project sponsored by the Finnish Rural Network. We asked him to share his insights into happiness and what it takes to be happy like a Finn.
